How Can Teen Girls Become Involved in The Woman’s Discovery Center?
Our TEEN COUNCIL is made up of representatives from each of the high schools in the area. These representatives work with us to determine what teens are interested in learning about and how they are interested in serving others. We want The Woman’s Discovery Center to be a place for teens to feel welcome to come to have fun discovering new things about themselves, meet new friends of all ages, and figure out ways to make a difference to other people. YOU can be a part of making all this and more happen!
Qualifications and Expectations of Members of the Teen Council:
- High moral standards, someone that other girls respect
- Interested in interacting with other teens, adults, and preteens
- Willing to try new things to find out where your gifts may be
- Ready to participate in service to others – in projects with other teens, with adults and/or with preteens
- Eager to learn to make a difference in the lives of other people in our community
As activities are developed, subcommittees will take leadership of specific activities and recruit additional teen girls to become involved. Each council member will choose her specific areas of involvement. Each year as members of the senior classes graduate, we will add younger teens to the council to replace them, but will have the remaining experienced council members to mentor those new members.

Members of the council will have the opportunity to meet one another as well as members of the Board of Directors of the Center. Last year’s founding Teen Council suggested having a “Pay It Forward” project. So far members of this year’s council have discussed quarterly projects. This “Pay It Forward” project will be lots of fun, as well as a fantastic opportunity for training in leadership, organizational skills, and community service. You will have full backing from adults to assist and mentor you to help make your selected projects meaningful and successful. You and the other teens and preteens that you recruit to work on your project can really “make a difference” in the lives of those who really need it!
Our TEEN COUNCIL has already made a big impact in our community by organizing a BackPacks for Kids Drive just before the 2007 holiday season, partnering with the ASU Women's Athletic program and WalMart to successfully provide much needed food items for children from local schools during the holidays. The school counselors responded to this project with much gratitude because it truly came "just in time" before their supplies were depleted.
The teens have also been instrumental in the success of our summer 2008 preteen DISCOVERY GIRLS day camp. They helped in the planning and implementation of the camp's activities. The younger girls adored having these role models advising them on how to "be cool" in the best possible ways!
We will be adding members from each of the area schools to the Teen Council as the new school year gets underway.
